ロジャー・マクドナルド

館長

 

東京生まれ。イギリスで教育を受ける。学士では、国際政治学。修士では、神秘宗教学(禅やサイケデリック文化研究)。博士号では、『アウトサイダー・アート』(1972年)の執筆者ロジャー・カーディナルに師事し美術史を学ぶ。1998年より、インディペンデント・キュレーターとして活動。「横浜トリエンナーレ2001」アシスタント・キュレーター、第一回「シンガポール・ビエンナーレ 2006」キュレーターを務める。2003年より国内外の美術大学にて非常勤講師として教鞭をとる。長野県佐久市に移住後、2013年に実験的なハウスミュージアム「フェンバーガーハウス」をオープン、館長を務める。また、国内初の英国式「チャトニー」(チャツネ)を生産・販売している。興味は美術史、絵画、変性意識状態、オーディオ鑑賞、踊り、山。AIT設立メンバーの一人。

 

Roger McDonald

Born in Tokyo 1971, Japanese mother and British father. Survives the English boarding school system (is the youngest escapee from prep school to this day). After BA at Aberystwyth University, Wales, studies Mysticism and Religious Experience at University of Kent, Canterbury. Attends two day workshop by Terence McKenna, London, 1994. Interests in Zen Buddhism and Psychedelic experience. During this period stays in Zen monastery in Okayama, Japan for two short summer sessions. Loses interest in institutional religious life and directs attention towards personal and collective experience through various techniques and organizing house parties. Begins PhD with Professor Roger Cardinal (Outsider Art, 1972) at Canterbury, researching American abstract painter Mark Tobey's Zen influence and trip to Japan in 1934. Moves to Japan in 1999 upon completion of doctorate. Assistant curator for first Yokohama Triennale 2001, works with Fumio Nanjo. Independent curatorial activities begin in 1998 with ARTO/ARFO project where art works are buried and excavated over the duration of the exhibition. Organises the 'Kingergarten' exhibition at Sumida kindergarden in 2000. Founding member of Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT) and its school program MAD, 2001/02. Organises several independent exhibitions including 'Moving Collection' (2004-7) which travels in a suitcase around Japan and New Zealand. One of the curators for the first Singapore Biennale 'Belief' in 2006. External lecturer at Musashino Art University, Joshi Art University, Tama Art University and Tokyo Zokei Art University (2002 -  2015). Visiting lecturer at Hong Kong Art Center 2014-16 and guest curator of 'Intimate Curiosity', 2016. Moves to Saku, Nagano in 2010, opens Fenberger House in 2014. Begins Space Music Club in 2015. Attends the first Estar(Ser) International Conference (The Order of the Third Bird) in Los Angeles, 2016. Curator for 'Museum of Together', Spiral, Aoyama, 2017, which shows Japanese outsider artists and contemporary artists. Director of AIT's MAD school program since 2015 which focuses on holistic perspectives and art. Establishes The Museum of Cosmic Consciousness at Fenberger House, 2018.
